This is the group for South Africa where all South Africans belong. You should probably belong to this group and also to a cohort group (a cohort is a group which meets in your area to talk about issues important to those in the emerging church conversation - if there's not one near you, why not start one up?).

Hello
I have been tagging along for a while now, just popping every odd now and then. Now I have decided to join the conversation by blogging regularly. A year ago I moved the Cape to Jozi, would love to be part of a discussion group where lots of coffee/wine (hopefully both) and good old life-theology are consumed.
Anybody out there?
Cheers
Fourie Rossouw

Hi all
Got a tip from the friendly zondervanians that Phillip Yancey will be coming to South Africa next month. Will keep you posted as soon as I get final dates for events. I should be able to wangle a few seats for us.
Hi all
My husband and I went to a small town in the Karoo a while ago - Carnarvon. It's an amazing little place, 1 hour away from the nearest big town (and that "big town" is Calvinia). They live in complete isolation...and racial tensions are high. They desperately need outside help. One man moved back to Carnarvon after living in Cape Town for 15 years, with the goal in mind to save it. We have hooked up with him.
I recently sent them a food parcel that should feed about 200 people and am organizing to send food and clothing there again in December. We are quite desperate for donations of food, clothing and cash to cover delivery costs as we cannot afford to get it there by ourselves.
Point of interest: are there any congregations in SA that you consider to be "emergent" or "postmodern"?
I've been reading this tome my company published callëd "Die relevansie van die kerk", which is giving me a headache but also some insights, and I deeply desire to attend church again.

I saw in Perspectives Magazine that the emergent church has a "canon", or collection of classic books!
These include:
A Renovation of the Heart - Dallas Willard
Missional Church - Various
Streams of Living Water - RJ Foster
A Generous Orthodoxy - Brian McLaren
A is for Abductive - Various
A Primer on Postmodernism - Stanley J Grenz
The Cost of Discipleship - D Bonhoeffer
Leadership and the New Science - MJ Wheatley
New Seeds of Contemplation - THomas Merton
The Prophetic Imagination - Walter Brueggemann
Soul Survivor - Yancey
The Divine Conspiracy - Dallas Willard
The Great Divorce - CS Lewis
Blue like Jazz - Donald Miller
The Resurrection of the Son of God - NT Wright
Exclusion and Embrace - M Volf
The CHurch on the other side - McLaren
Thanks for the meetup tonight, everyone - I really enjoyed it as well as meeting all of you! Thanks also to Pierre for hosting us at Third Place.
For those who weren't there - here's what happened. We each introduced ourselves and told our own stories briefly (had to be - there were 18 of us!) and said what we'd expect out of a group like this. Some of the things were:
I have just heard that Scot McKnight (www.jesuscreed.org) will be in Stellenbosch at the Faculty of Theology on Monday 12 May! It is short notice but will be well worth it if you can make it. Here is the official notice from the 'Kweekskool':
The well-known New Testament scholar, Prof Scot McKnight, will be visiting the Faculty of Theology on Monday 12 May and will make the following two presentations, both at the Kweekskool building:
* 09:00-10:30 The Missional Jesus
* 11:00 - 12:30 Teaching the Bible to the emerging (postmodern) generation.
It's about time I organised a meetup in Joburg - a "Hi, pleased to meet you, you don't look anything like your online picture and you sound fairly normal in person, pity about the hair," type thing. And also to meet others who might be thinking and doing the same things you are.
So how about Friday, November 16 around 6pm? We can either do it at a coffee shop or at someone's house (someone volunteered earlier but I can't remember who...). Just an informal gathering and good conversation.
Venue suggestions:
Europa in Linden (although it's pretty busy that time...I'd have to book a table)
[Insert your name here]'s house
Let me know who's keen and if that date and time suits, and we'll go from there :)
