I thought it worth mentioning the Afrika Burns festival which according to the website is going to take place between the 22nd and 25th November near the Tankwa Karoo National Park, about 3 hours north of Cape Town.
Modelled on the legendary "Burning Man" festival, it seeks to create a temporary autonomous zone in the middle of the desert, with the content coming not from a commitee but from the participants themselves. The theme for the inaugaral SA event is "Tribe". Tickets range from R100 - R350, based on what is affordable.

All who attend are encouraged to contribute whatever they want to: from sculpture and installations, to musical or dramatic performances, environmental experimentation, to almost anything else one can think of. And my imagination is "on fire" here ...
I visualise guerilla Liturgies, Audio Visual Performance, workshopping any number of salient topics, Jeremiah-type prophetic enactments, St Francis style preaching to the desert, Jesus inspired Shamanism, busking, practicing The Healing Arts of the Holy Spirit, and of course much communing with and getting to know artists, prophets, pagans, and kooks.
The core principles alone are food for thought: COMMUNAL EFFORT, PARTICIPATION, CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY, IMMEDIACY, DECOMMODIFICATION, GIFTING, LEAVING NO TRACE, RADICAL INCLUSION, RADICAL SELF-RELIANCE, RADICAL SELF-EXPRESSION.

For those interested in missional apologetics, John W Morehead gives an imaginative, prophetic evangelical response to Burning Man in his essays
"Burn, Baby, Burn, Christendom Inferno: Burning Man and the Festive Immolation of Christendom Culture and Modernity" and "Apocalyptic Man Ablaze: The Hope of Burning Man's Effigy Fulfilled in the Risen Holy Fool"
I'm still investigating, and have not as yet made sucessful contact with an organiser (all I have to go on is the website) but from what I understand it will be what we make it, and I for one will be heading north into the unknown, for the unwritten adventure of the open page ... What might G-d be saying or doing at Afrika Burns?

opportunity opportunity opportunity
Nic,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This is an opportunity for those of considering how to engage in mission to actively step out and engage. I'm reminded of Paul and other historical missionary endeavours where moved beyond their churches and home bases in order to connect with people seeking spirituality and community. What an incredible opportunity to participate in. What an amazing opportunity to announce that Godess draws near to those who seek Her. What an opportunity to demonstrate His affection and commitment. What an opportunity wherein the another postmodern community may emerge to honour Jesus, Spirit and YHWH.
Father, let your kingdom come!

I see that hand
Matthew 11:12 - From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.
Enthusiasm is "God within passion", and it is this that drives the Kingdom forward.
Viva!
Phambili!
Avanti!
Voorwaarts!
Gaaforeet!
So, are you going?
Are you going, Nic? I'd be really interested to see if this festival continues in the spirit of the Burning Man festival...I hope it's a success.

Hi Rog
I am! So is Tim (envoy), and hopefully a landrover load from Jozie.
I have been getting really excited about the Liturgical possiblities in the context, and as envoy noted, this is about mission. I am hoping to meet the organisers this weekend.
Great!
Great - man, I'm jealous, but hey - when the monastery calls, what can you do?!
both and
Rog - you keep the contemplative fires stoked and we shall venture forth into the desert; one day we shall all understand how it fits together. NT Wright will explain it to us. In 2010. Can you wait that long?
Why contemplation is like chaos theory!
The point of contemplation is to prepare for action. Just like the point of solitude is to withdraw from people so you can more fully give yourselves to them...and so we have:
Cause -> Effect -> Cause. Causes become effects and effects become causes...just like chaos theory. Contemplation becomes action which leads into...well, the desert. So either you're in front of me or catching up - I can't quite tell. And if you're moving faster than light then that just messed everything up.
perfectly out of phase
I sort of follow you, if you see where I am leading.
You are talking classic Liberation theology now. Or maybe the Process aspect of LT.
Preparation->Action->Reflection-
