He came to Moscow as a journalist in his late 20s, sold an exclusive interview to the Daily Mail and became a war correspondent for NBC News in Afghanistan and on the front lines of the Balkans. Today he’s the bachelor at the center of a media frenzy that has seen him unceremoniously dumped from a reality TV show and slapped with a restraining order.
But Carter Reum, 36, is closer to Paris Hilton than he is to Lester Holt.
Reum — or “Vinny Brutt” as he is known to his friends — has found love for a third time with the gorgeous Hilton, 36, the heiress and DJ who he met at a New Year’s Eve party in Zurich last year. The couple was married at a palatial castle in the Czech Republic on Sunday, and her children and grandchildren attended.
The bride wore a white Vera Wang gown and her younger sister, Nicky Hilton Rothschild, held her hand as they walked down the aisle.
A longtime friend of Reum, Amber Fong, told People that she and Reum “were stunned to hear the news as we are thrilled for them both.”
“I am told they have been dating for 10 months and are completely in love,” she said.
“I am very excited to start my life with him,” Hilton told People. “It’s great to be starting my life with him!”
It is, without question, an unusual wedding. Reum, in the 1990s, had been famously kicked off the set of reality TV show “The Simple Life,” where he accompanied star-in-the-making Nicole Richie.
In the intervening years, Reum was a television star in his own right, star of the CNBC show “Market Warriors” and “Real Money with Carter Reum.” He also edited Fortune magazine.
He also divorced from former Olympic-style skier Alexy Telles after getting into a heated altercation with him in 2012 while on a flight out of Los Angeles.
And he tried his hand at a career in politics. He ran for Congress in Arkansas in 2014, but never got the candidacy off the ground.
Now, the London-based musician is living on $1,000 a month. He lives in a ninth-floor apartment in London and pays $575 a month for his rent, which he found on Craigslist. Reum and Hilton bought a townhouse together in Miami Beach in 2014, but parted ways later that year.
Reum and Hilton met at the 2017 Wodka Sunrise New Year’s Eve party in Switzerland, where Reum had interviewed Hilton for about 30 minutes on the phone beforehand, according to Fong. They hit it off immediately, said Fong, who added that Hilton found Reum the “best pilot in the world.”
“She described Vinny as her future husband and said that there is a lifetime between them,” Fong said.
He also interviewed Hilton and then got a call from a guest who wanted to invite her out. Fong guessed that Hilton was so enchanted by Reum that she arranged for them to go to Russia together.
“When they arrived in Moscow in mid-November, he texted me and said that he was there with Paris and he said, ‘I am the most famous man in the world and she has never met anyone better,'” Fong said.
Because Hilton and Reum didn’t like the idea of being in the spotlight with one another, they went out the next day for dinner at a new restaurant, Figaro in Paris, and took a cab. There, he told Fong that he was “going to find Paris” in order to show her off.
“He showed me Paris,” Fong said. “They were so nervous about being together, so Paris was opening up her book to him.”
And now they are married? Fong said she did not know that. “I am so excited for them both.”
